Arthur S. Demoulas has donated $500,000 to the men’s ice hockey program at the University of Maine through the Black Bear Student-Athlete Experience Fund, according to an April 10 announcement.
The donation is intended to encourage others to contribute and help ensure continued support for Maine hockey. The fund aims to enhance opportunities for student-athletes by supporting scholarships, nutrition, travel, and other expenses now allowed under current collegiate athletics rules.
Men’s ice hockey head coach Ben Barr said, “Arthur’s lead gift has given Maine hockey great momentum as we embrace the new NCAA landscape. This gift gives us the momentum needed to keep Black Bear hockey thriving. With the recently renovated Shawn Walsh Hockey Center and Alfond Arena, and best game day environment, Black Bear hockey is in a great position to thrive well into the future. We are blessed to have Arthur as a supporter, just as we are humbled to have Black Bear Nation by our side every night at the Alfond.”
The Black Bear Student-Athlete Experience Fund was created with the University of Maine Foundation in order to provide student-athletes with what organizers describe as “the best experience in college athletics” so that UMaine can remain competitive and adaptable in a changing landscape for college sports. Donors may give general support or direct their contributions toward specific teams.
Demoulas played defenseman for Maine’s men’s ice hockey team during Alfond Arena’s first season in 1977 and again in 1978.
The university hopes this initial contribution will inspire further donations from supporters who want to help sustain success for UMaine’s athletic programs.
