The University of Maine baseball team defeated number 22 Boston College on April 21, marking its first win over a nationally ranked opponent since 2018.
This victory is significant for the Black Bears, who have been seeking a breakthrough against top-tier competition in recent years. The game took place in Brighton, Massachusetts, with Maine securing a 6-4 win.
Troy Carpenter played a key role by driving in the first run with an RBI single and later hitting his eleventh home run of the season. Juju Stevens added to the early lead with a sacrifice fly and sealed the game in the ninth inning with his tenth home run of the year, bringing home Carpenter as well. Albert De La Rosa returned from injury to contribute an RBI double during his third at-bat.
On the pitching side, Thomas Stabley started and went three and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs. Erik Swenson delivered two scoreless innings out of relief and became the first Maine pitcher this season to strike out all three batters he faced in one inning. Sebastian Holt earned his fourth save by closing out the ninth without allowing any runs.
Looking ahead, Maine (12-24) will return to Orono for a three-game series against UMBC starting Friday, April 24. The opening game is scheduled for Greek Day at Mahaney Diamond.
