The University of Maine baseball team lost to No. 22 Boston College, 7-4, in a game played on March 31 in Brighton, Massachusetts.
The matchup saw Maine keep pace with a nationally ranked opponent, tying the game late before Boston College secured the win. The result brings Maine’s season record to 5-21 as they prepare for their upcoming home opener.
Troy Carpenter drove in Quinn Murphy with a single to left field for Maine’s first run. Brody Rasmussen followed with a sacrifice fly that brought Juju Stevens home, giving the Black Bears two early runs. In the seventh inning, Chris Bear tied the score at three with a sacrifice fly scoring Drew Reynolds. Shortly after, Stevens delivered an RBI single to center field that put Maine ahead temporarily by bringing Nolan DeAndrade across the plate.
Starting pitcher Thomas Stabley went four and two-thirds innings against Boston College, allowing three runs on two hits while striking out three batters and walking two. Sebastian Holt entered in relief for one and one-third innings without allowing any runs. Tommy Martin pitched into the seventh inning but gave up one run before Owen Wheeler took over in the eighth and was charged with three runs over just one-third of an inning. Brennan Rumpf finished out the eighth without allowing further damage.
Maine will look to rebound as they return home for their opener on Thursday, April 2 at Orono, where first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
