The University of Maine baseball team lost to Winthrop 9-6 in a closely contested game on Sunday afternoon in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The matchup was the final game of the series between the two teams.
Maine’s offense was highlighted by Rex Hauser and Juju Stevens, who each hit multiple home runs during the game. Hauser recorded his first collegiate hit with a solo home run to right field in the third inning. He followed that up with a three-run homer in the fourth, bringing in Hunter St. Denis and Quinn Murphy.
Stevens also contributed significantly, hitting solo home runs in both the third and fifth innings. His second home run gave him five for the season, making him the team leader in that category.
On the mound, Thomas Stabley started for Maine but pitched only two innings, giving up three runs on three hits and striking out two batters. Brennan Hileman relieved him and allowed two runs over one inning. Erik Swenson delivered a scoreless fourth inning, while Vaun Larisa threw two shutout innings as well.
Tommy Martin took the loss for Maine, pitching an inning and a third and allowing two runs on one hit while walking three batters. Sabastian Holt came on in the eighth inning and gave up one run before Owen Wheeler finished out the frame by striking out the only batter he faced.
The Black Bears now hold a 2-10 record this season. Their next series is scheduled against Dayton starting Friday, March 6, with all games set to begin at noon.
