The University of Maine baseball team lost a close game to Dayton in the second matchup of their weekend series, falling 10-9 after a walk-off hit. The game, which began on Saturday afternoon, was completed on Sunday due to darkness.
Maine took an early lead when Juju Stevens hit his sixth home run of the season in the first inning. In the second inning, Brody Rasmussen added three more runs for Maine with his first home run of the year, bringing Shane Andrus and Albert De La Rosa across the plate.
Quinn Murphy contributed a two-run homer in the fourth inning—his second of both the series and season—scoring Aidan Bardi. Later in that inning, Troy Carpenter drove in another run with an RBI single that brought Stevens home.
Aidan Bardi closed out Maine’s scoring by hitting a double down the left field line in a later inning, allowing Troy Carpenter and Chris Bear to score.
On the mound, Jason Krieger started for Maine and pitched five innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits while striking out six. Vaun Larisa relieved him for three innings without allowing any runs. Jack Donlin pitched at the start of the ninth but gave up three runs (one earned) without recording an out. Owen Wheeler entered with bases loaded during that frame and allowed two more runs before being replaced by Sebastian Holt, who surrendered two hits including Dayton’s walk-off.
Maine now holds a record of 2-12 this season. The Black Bears are scheduled to play Dayton again on Sunday for their final game of the weekend series at 12:35 PM.
