Maine baseball loses series finale to Dayton; prepares for Nebraska matchup

The University of Maine baseball team lost its weekend series finale against Dayton on Sunday in Dayton, Ohio, with a final score of 14-8. This result means Maine was swept in the series.

During the game, Albert De La Rosa and Rex Hauser each hit solo home runs in the fourth inning, marking De La Rosa’s second home run this season and Hauser’s third. In the fifth inning, Juju Stevens scored on a throwing error before Troy Carpenter hit an RBI double to bring in Hunter St. Denis. Carpenter later scored on a groundout.

St. Denis added another run for Maine in the sixth by drawing a bases-loaded walk that brought Brody Rasmussen home. The Black Bears’ final two runs came in the eighth inning from doubles by St. Denis and Drew Reynolds, scoring Quinn Murphy and St. Denis respectively.

On the pitching side, Rex Hauser made his first collegiate start for Maine, allowing two runs on two hits over three innings while striking out two batters. Brennan Rumpf pitched the fourth inning and gave up two runs. Erik Swenson took the loss after surrendering three runs without recording an out in the fifth.

Tommy Martin allowed six runs over one and two-thirds innings with four walks and two strikeouts. Marshall Loch pitched one-third of an inning, giving up one run on two hits and a walk. Owen Wheeler and Jack Donlin handled the seventh and eighth innings for Maine, together allowing just one hit and striking out three batters.

Maine’s record now stands at 2-13 this season. The team will travel next to Nebraska to face the reigning Big Ten champions for a three-game series starting Friday, March 13 at 7 p.m.
