Maine Black Bears finish fifth at Jim Kavanagh Legacy Invitational in Worcester

The University of Maine track and field team competed at the Jim Kavanagh Legacy Invitational hosted by Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts on April 18. The Black Bears finished fifth overall, scoring a total of 29 points.

The meet saw Maine athletes participate across several events. In relay races, the team of Addison Nelson, Abby Rodriquenz, Kara Tschida, and Meredith Walters placed seventh in the 4×400 meter relay with a time of 4:08.69. Another relay squad—Maddie Cyr, Cassidy Novicka, Catherine Primavera, and Bayleigh Shanahan—finished eighth with a time of 4:14.28.

In individual sprints and distance events, Bayleigh Shanahan was fifth in the 100 meters (12.62 seconds), while Maddie Chaput and Callie Tennett placed eleventh and thirteenth respectively. In the 200 meters, Catherine Primavera took tenth place (26.36 seconds), followed closely by Shanahan and Cyr in twelfth and thirteenth places.

Middle-distance performances included Maddie Cyr finishing fifth in the 400 meters (59.90 seconds) and Meredith Walters also placing fifth in the 800 meters (2:14.38). Natalie Johnson earned second place for Maine in the women’s 5000 meters with a time of 17:55.17.

Field event highlights included Saphryn Humason’s sixth-place finish in long jump (5.05m) and Ava Zollars taking fourth place in hammer throw (44.56m). Athena Cusson was ninth overall in shot put with a distance of 9.59m.

The Black Bears are scheduled to compete next at the Penn Relays beginning Thursday, April 23.
