Maine finishes second at Jim Kavanagh Invitational with six event wins

The University of Maine track and field team competed at the Jim Kavanagh Legacy Invitational hosted by Holy Cross on April 18, finishing in second place with a total of 175 points.

The event showcased strong performances from Maine athletes, who captured first place in six different events. These results highlight the team’s depth and competitiveness as they approach upcoming meets.

In relay action, the quartet of AJ Sebastien, Josh Sewell, Max Shapiro, and Cole Martin secured third place in the 4×100 meter relay with a time of 41.92 seconds. The team also placed third in the 4×400 meter relay thanks to Matt Firlings, Aran Johnson, Jacob Robinson-Smey, and Dan Knight’s efforts.

Individually, Andrew Card won the men’s 400 meters with a time of 47.34 seconds. Kyle McClellan took first place in the men’s 5000 meters (15:19.07), while Ryan Fernstrom won the men’s 400 meter hurdles (54.96). Thomas McCormack cleared a height of 4.41 meters to win pole vault. In field events, Conor Morin captured first in triple jump (14.62m), Ryker Brown topped shot put (17.56m), and Gavin McGarrity won hammer throw (62m).

Other notable finishes included multiple top-five placements across sprints and distance races as well as jumps and throws for Maine athletes.

The Black Bears will next compete at the Penn Relays starting Thursday April 23.
