On the above date, time, and location the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and the Gray Fire Department and Rescue responded for a report of a dump truck off the road into the woods that had struck a tree. The operator was initially trapped in the truck due to a tree on the cab. There was also visible diesel fuel leaking from the truck. Upon investigation it was determined that Douglas Battey (63) of Danville ME, was operating a 2016 Peterbuilt Dump truck (owned by J F Hutchinson CO.) east bound on the West Gray Road. After just crossing into the town of Gray from the town of Windham, Battey failed to negotiate a left hand corner and drove straight off the road into the woods.
Battey was transported by Gray Rescue to Maine Medical Center for minor injuries. The Dump truck came to rest at the edge of a residential property and approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the ground near a drinking well. The Dump truck sustained major damage. The Department of Environmental Protection, Maine DOT, and a Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit responded to assist at the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
