Last night, we had the privilege to present Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Chaplain, Reverend Jeffrey McIlwain, with the 2022 National Sheriffs’ Association Chaplain of the Year award. The National Sheriffs’ Association, which represents the 3,083 United States Sheriffs, chose Reverend Jeff, as he is affectionately known for his hard work, compassion, and dedication with the staff and inmates at the Cumberland County Jail.
Reverend Jeff was hired as Chaplain of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office in November 2001. He was one of the first Chaplains used by a law enforcement agency and jail, and is an exemplary leader in police chaplaincy.
Reverend Jeff continually provides religious services to 275-500 inmates at the Cumberland County Jail, approves religious meal requests at the jail, supports Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office staff with religious needs and oversees the religious volunteers who come to the jail each week. Reverend Jeff has been asked on numerous occasions to perform weddings and funerals for CCSO staff, inmates and former inmates.
He is often requested to the scene of significant traumatic events for support of victims and victim’s families. Reverend Jeff has mentored numerous religious volunteers and individuals interested in becoming a public safety chaplain.
His service to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, the citizens of Cumberland County and the inmates at the Cumberland County Jail has been impeccable. We congratulate Reverend Jeff McIlwain on this very prestigious award! Thank you for all you do!
