Penobscot County Sheriff's Office Multiple Law Enforcement Agencies Respond to Newport Campground for Report of Person with a Weapon

Multiple law enforcement agencies respond to Newport Campground for report of person with a weapon. 

The following is a joint release from Chief David Wintle of the Newport Police Department and Sheriff Troy Morton of Penobscot County concerning an officer-involved shooting in Newport on the afternoon of Friday, July 15, 2022.

The Penobscot County Regional Communications Center received a report of a social media post that there was a person with a weapon at the Sebasticook Lake Campground in Newport. 

Officers from the Newport Police Department, the Dexter Police Department, the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office, and the Maine State Police responded. 

Deputy Kenneth York of the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office was the first on the scene and was confronted by a man with a gun.  As a result of an armed confrontation, Stephen Bossom, 35, was shot and killed by Deputy York.

As is customary in any officer-involved shooting, Deputy York is on administrative leave and the MaineOffice of the Attorney General is investigating the incident.

No further information will be released at this time.
