On September 24, 2022, at approximately 12:19 am, the Cumberland County Regional Communication Center received a call for a motor vehicle crash on Brown Road near Hallowell Road, in Pownal. Cumberland County Sheriff’s Deputies, Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Deputies, Pownal Fire, Durham Fire, and Freeport rescue responded to the area and located a white Toyota Rav4 upside down in a field. The Toyota received extensive damage after going off the road on the left, down an embankment, hitting some small trees, and rolling over.

Jack Kelley (19) of Durham was operating the 2016 Toyota RAV4 SUV. Passengers Zane Campbell (19) of Durham and Jonathan Doyle II (19) of Durham were transported to Maine Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Passenger Shaina Curry (19) of Freeport was evaluated on scene and released.

Zane Campbell and Jonathan Doyle were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from the vehicle during the crash. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, it is believed speed and alcohol were factors in this crash.

As a result of the investigation, Jack Kelly was charged with operating without a license due to violating the zero tolerance by having alcohol in his system under the age of 21.

During the crash investigation, Jack Kelly’s mother, Margaret Kelley (53) of Durham drove herself to the scene and was also charged with operating under the influence.
