Fall Enrollment up 14.3% at Eastern Maine Community College

Eastern Maine Community College (EMCC) has seen a significant increase in enrollment numbers this fall, largely thanks to the new Free College Scholarship and the post- covid return to regular campus activities. Fall enrollment is up 14.3% at EMCC, with 2,375 students registered in programs and credit courses.

“The Free College initiative not only helped motivate students impacted by the pandemic to pursue higher education, but it also showcased the value of a community college education – both as a stand-alone degree to open up career opportunities but also as an entry point to save money and acquire a strong general education foundation before transferring to a baccalaureate institution,” said Elizabeth True, Vice President of Student Affairs at EMCC.

For fall 2022, EMCC’s direct from high school headcount increased 67% from 240 to 401. High school graduates from the Classes of 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 all qualify for a Free College Scholarship that pays 100% of tuition and mandatory fees after grant aid has been applied.

Ashley, a first-year student enrolled under the Free College Scholarship said: “Free college is making my future possible. It’s allowing me to explore my career options to make the best choice for my future without incurring debt.”

Other factors contributing to the increase in enrollment at EMCC include expanded concurrent enrollment opportunities for Maine’s high school learners and the infusion of workforce development programs funded by the Maine Jobs and Recovery Act and the Harold Alfond Center for the Advancement of Maine’s Workforce.

“It’s an exciting time to be part of Eastern Maine Community College,” notes Liz Russell, President. “The needs of our community’s learners are changing, and EMCC is in a unique position to respond to those needs through innovation, flexible scheduling and delivery models, and offering our programs at remote locations within our service area.”
