This week is National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week. At EMCC we are committed to learning more about how we can assist our students and community with these critical social issues.
On Wednesday night, we hosted our first annual Hunger Awareness Dinner. Participants were randomly assigned to socio-economic groups based on current income levels in Maine. The highest socioeconomic group (and the smallest) enjoyed multiple courses served by a waiter, the largest group, the middle class, ate a “typical” dinner - not exciting, but plentiful. The lowest income group had pasta and water. The event was facilitated by Kim Lengert, from the Maine Department of Agriculture, who educated us on Maine’s initiative to end hunger in Maine by 2030. The event was made possible by a generous grant from the Melmac Foundation.
Today, the community gathered to put in the fence and soil for EMCC’s new community garden. This project, spearheaded by our Americorps Vista member, Cathy Ryder (whose position is funded by the Maine Dept of Agriculture) and also sponsored by MELMAC, will add fresh produce to the food offered to students in our campus food pantry.
