Cumberland County Sheriff's Office Press Release January 14 2023 | Cumberland County Sheriff's Office

Incident Location: Gray, New Gloucester, North Yarmouth, Pownal, Yarmouth, Cumberland

Release Date: January 14 2023

Release Time: 7:00 PM

Since October of 2022, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office has taken over thirty reports of criminal mischief to mailboxes and signs in the Towns of Gray, New Gloucester, North Yarmouth and Pownal. Most incidents occurred during the overnight hours and involved what appeared to be multiple suspects in vehicles, traveling through various parts of the county.

Over the last few days, the Sheriff’s Office obtained information regarding possible suspects. After multiple interviews, several local juvenile suspects have been identified. These interviews, along with evidence collected over the course of several months, have been instrumental in solving more than fifty crimes in the region, to include vandalism and theft occurring in the Towns of Cumberland and Yarmouth.

The investigation determined that several groups of juveniles would drive the area and randomly vandalize and steal various items. In some instances, all-terrain vehicles were taken on joy rides, portable bathrooms were knocked over, and street signs were stolen.

This investigation is ongoing and will likely result in multiple juveniles and young adults being charged with various crimes. Due to the volume of crimes occurring in several jurisdictions, coupled with numerous adult and juvenile suspects, the cases will be presented to the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office for review. Additional information will be released when appropriate.

Many community members were instrumental in reporting these crimes and determining who the suspects were. The Sheriff’s Office appreciates the attentiveness of the citizens and their willingness to step forward with information.
