Female Inmates charged in drug smuggling case | Penobscot County Sheriff's Office
On January 19, 2023, at 5:10 pm, Correctional Officers responded to a medical event within the Penobscot County Jail. Three female inmates were transported to a local hospital for treatment during this incident.
Over several days, the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division and Correctional staff conducted an extensive investigation throughout the facility.
During this investigation, subsequent searches were conducted for any illegal contraband. Information was developed that a female inmate had smuggled a large amount of dangerous drugs into the facility, inside their body cavity. Additional information was developed indicating other inmates may now have some of the remaining drugs.
Correctional staff were able to locate a container of suspected drugs, and Detectives conducted presumptive testing on the items. Detectives determined that the inmate had over 18 grams of Fentanyl in her possession.
These incidents put many lives at risk including, the individuals who smuggle drugs, other inmates, staff and vendors. This dangerous criminal behavior also negatively impacts those who are trying to maintain sobriety, including many in the jail's MAT program.
On February 02, 2023, 30-year-old Karen Jordan of Springfield, Maine, was charged with two counts of Class A (Felony) Aggravated Trafficking of Scheduled Drugs and one count of Class C (Felony) Trafficking in Prison Contraband and 39-year-old Heather Carlow of Portland, Maine, was charged with two counts of Class A (Felony) Aggravated Trafficking of Scheduled Drugs and one count of Violation of Condition of Release. The Bangor Fire Department, Bangor Police Department, Bangor Police K-9 Officer Taylor Reynolds, and Maine Drug Enforcement Special Agents assisted the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office.
