WASHINGTON — Congressman Jared Golden (ME-02) announced the award of $52,971.42 to the North Lakes fire district in Caribou through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program. The funds will be used to replace aging airpacks and bottles.

“The firefighters in the County brave dangerous situations every day to keep their family and neighbors safe,” said Golden. “They need and deserve the best equipment to keep themselves safe on the job. I’m proud to work to ensure that firefighters in Maine have the resources they need to keep their equipment up to date and in the best shape possible.”

“Our department does all it can to remain fiscally responsible while ensuring that our responders have the critical equipment that we need to do the job,” said North Lakes Fire & Rescue Chief Darren Woods. “Without the assistance of grants like the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG), we would not be able to meet those goals.  Our department is very grateful for the help we have gotten from AFG and the congressional offices that support it.”

North Lakes Fire & Rescue is a department with three substations that serve recreational and residential areas on Cross Lake, Mud Lake, Long Lake, Madawaska Lake, Square Lake, and Westmanland.

Golden is the co-lead of legislation to reauthorize the AFG program this Congress.
