Potential overdose death being investigated at the Penobscot County Jail.

On Wednesday, January 3rd at approximately 8:20pm, Correctional Officers were alerted to an emergency within a quarantine unit in the Penobscot County Jail. Upon arrival officers found a male inmate unresponsive and other inmates attempting to resuscitate him.

Correctional officers and medical staff performed medical care until Bangor Fire and Rescue arrived. Unfortunately, they were unable to revive the male.

An early investigation indicates the medical event was not caused by any physical altercation between inmates or with staff.  The incident is being investigated as a potential overdose death and we are awaiting results of a post-mortem examination from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The Bangor Police Department was called to investigate and the Maine Department of Corrections was notified as part of the Attorney General’s Death Investigation Protocol.

A name will not be released at this time. While the immediate family has been notified, they are traveling and reasonable time will be given for them to share the information with other family and friends.
