Husson University Baker scores seven in women's lacrosse loss at Massachusetts Maritime Academy

Massachusetts Maritime Academy defeated Husson University, 13-12, in a non-conference women's lacrosse contest at Clean Harbors Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Directly off the opening draw won by freshman Brady Deschamps, she stormed down the field and scored 12 seconds in to give Massachusetts Maritime Academy a 1-0 lead. The Buccaneers went on to score two more unanswered from junior Cassie Llewellyn and sophomore Allie Dickinson to take a 3-0 lead halfway through the first. Husson got one back at 4:32 from senior Devyn Veits and Husson trailed Massachusetts Maritime 3-1 after one quarter of play.

In the second, Husson scored the first two as freshman Averi Baker and senior Sophia Gomez netted scores to tie the game at 3-3. Massachusetts Maritime went on a three-goal run again from 11:33 to 8:57 with goals from sophomore Lindsy Durgin, Llewellyn, and senior Paige Albertson to retake a three-goal, 6-3, advantage. In the final two minute of the half, the Eagles scored with 1:23 remaining from the stick of Baker to pull them within two. Llewellyn got a free position shot with eight seconds left and buried it to give the buccaneers a 7-4 lead at the half.

In the third quarter, Husson came out of the locker room firing as they outscored the Buccaneers 6-1 in the 15-minute period. The Eagles scored the first four in nine minutes including one on a women-up advantage, to tie the game and take an 8-7 lead. Husson received goals from sophomore Natalie Whitten, sophomore Maddy Benoit and two from Baker during the four goal run. Massachusetts Maritime tied it up at 8-8 on Deschamps second of the day at 4:11. Baker and freshman Laela Martinez scored in the final three minutes to give Husson their second lead of the quarter and a 10-8 advantage going into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, the Buccaneers scored the first two goals of the quarter from Albertson and Dickinson at 14:04 and 12 seconds later at 13:52 to tie the game at 10-10. Baker scored again for Husson at 9:50 to retake the lead but Massachusetts Maritime didn't go away as Llewellyn scored two more times, back-to-back at 7:57 and 5:50 to put them up 12-11. Durgin added another at 4:43 to make it a two-goal, 13-11, lead. With 1:13 left, Baker scored her seventh to get the Eagles within one. However, Massachusetts Maritime ran out the clock after the draw for the 13-12 victory.

Sophomore Emily Godfrey (1-2) made ten saves in the setback, while senior Sue Bird (2-2) stop six shots for the Buccaneers to earn the victory between the pipes.

Baker scored a game and career-high seven goals, while tallying the third most goals in a single-game in program history. She added four draw control victories with four ground balls, a caused turnover and an assist. Martinez recorded three assists with a goal, a caused turnover and a team-high seven goal balls. Freshman Emma Doirion dished out two helpers, while Whitten and Veits each had one assist. Whitten, Veits, Benoit, Gomez and Whitten each netted one goal for Husson. Defensively, Veits caused two turnovers.

Husson picked up 33 ground balls, were successful on 15-of-22 clears, won 12 draw controls, and took a total of 21 shots in the loss.

Llewellyn led all the Buccaneers with five goals in the win, while winning a game-high 11 draw controls. Dickinson, Durgin, Deschamps, and Albertson all scored twice. Dickinson recorded a game-high three assists. Llewellyn and Durgin each had two helpers. Deschamps added one assist. Durgin picked up a team-high six ground balls and caused a game-high six turnovers.

Massachusetts Maritime picked up 23 ground balls, were successful on 12-of-18 clear attempts, won 17 draws, and took 35 total shots
